Maternity photography is something that I haven’t spent much time doing, so when my beautiful friend brought up possibly taking some pictures of her baby belly, I jumped at the chance! We headed to a pretty, foresty area on a river nearby our houses and took some pictures! Here are a few of my favorites! As the weather warms up and engagement sessions are in full swing I thought I would put together a post with some fun ideas for couples to consider for their Asheville (or destination) engagement shoot. Except for the question “What do I wear?”- (You can check out this post I wrote for our thoughts on that) – “Where should we go/what should we do” is probably the most frequent question we hear! First and foremost…we encourage you to pick a location or activity that is fun and meaningful to who you are as a couple. It might be a casual afternoon spent visiting a local brewery (Asheville has plenty!) and exploring the streets of Asheville or adventuring to one of Western NC’s many scenic waterfalls… This is fine and I will gladly join you and we’ll create some awesome images – no doubt!
AND… I am encouraging you guys to think out of the box… think different…think adventurous… the sky is the limit (actually if we’re being honest… no limit there either, helicopters and planes welcome!). Use your engagement session as an excuse to step away from planning your wedding, work, daily life and just be together… Have fun!!
I plan to challenge myself this year – Get out of my comfort zone and shoot things that are different – Think beyond making pretty pictures and create images that are even more reflective of who you are as a couple… I want to tell your story…your love story!
So my challenge for you is to go beyond a walk in the park…for example….
Maybe you enjoy going to the farmers market and cooking together? Come up with a dish you love, get a six pack of your favorite local brew… I will meet you guys in your neighborhood, I’ll document your adventure to the farmers market and moments cooking together… Think day in the life. Just you two… being you!!
Do you love climbing? Great! Me too! Let’s go climbing… We can head to the local rock gym or even better, let’s get outside. Table Rock NC and Linville Gorge area is one of my favorite places… There is no shortage of amazing climbs. Or let’s head to Pisgah and out to Looking Glass for your rock climbing engagement session and end the evening with a beer at Oskar Blues.
If you enjoy hiking there’s no shortage of great hikes in Asheville and Western North Carolina. Here are a few mountains I would love to head to – camera in hand and an adventurous couple in tow – and create some amazing photographs: Roan Mountain Engagement | I haven’t been there yet and have been eyeing this beautiful mountain as a location for some epic adventure portraits. Hawksbill Mountain Engagement | Linville Gorge has long been one of my favorite hiking locations and I would love to take a couple up to the top of Hawksbill for some sunset engagement photos. Those are just a few possibilities. Want something a little closer to Asheville for your engagement photos? Let’s adventure up to Craggy Gardens or Black Balsam!
Want to turn your adventure engagement session into an overnight backpacking or camping trip?! Let’s do it!!! I am so game! Bring your four-legged hiking companion – We love dogs! No matter what you decide… Make it genuine, fun and representative of who you are as a couple… After all, it’s your love story & I’m just there to capture it! “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures
Happy Monday!!! For today’s adventure post I thought I would share a photo from a trip to Canyonlands National Park. We didn’t stay long but this area of the country made a lasting impression on me. I cannot wait to take our kids here for some outdoor adventure exploration… The landscape is so stunningly different from the mountains of Western North Carolina. I see a trip in our future!

Oh, you guys… It’s that time of year – okay okay, I’m 23 days late, but Happy New Year!!! This is one of my favorite posts of the year! 2016 was such a fantastic year -it marked AMW Studios first full wedding season here in Asheville, NC – and boy are we thrilled to be here! We traveled to beautiful places – including some pretty fantastic wedding venues – documented amazing love stories and met a whole slew of talented wedding industry people who we are so thankful to know!!! We are immensely grateful to all our amazing couples who chose to have us tell their stories – every one of the amazing weddings, adventurous engagement sessions and more!!! Thank you… From the bottom of our hearts! In all the years I lived here in the Asheville area as a kid and all the days I spent adventuring in the surrounding mountains, I cannot believe I never made it to Max Patch. Wow! Well, when fellow adventurers, Megan and Will, mentioned an interest in capturing some beautiful mountain scenery in the background of their post wedding day session – Max Patch immediately came to mind! A trend that seems more common here in the South is bridal portrait sessions!! I shot more pre-wedding bridal portraits this year than I ever did in the northeast… Let me just say – I adore it!!! I had so much fun with Jordan at Brown Mountain Beach Resort a few weeks before her wedding! It gave me a chance to scout out this gorgeous venue – and what bride wouldn’t want to get dressed up for some pre-wedding fun! Khristy and Andy’s beautiful wedding at Laurel Ridge Country Club was a highlight of our season! Kelly and Mark’s wedding at Magnolia Plantation in Charleston was the wedding that kicked off our 2016 season and man… It set the bar pretty high!!! I love these two images from their beautiful wedding in the Carriage House at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens! We got to photograph some pretty incredible, fun, adventurous engagement sessions this year! The cool thing about moving here to Asheville is that while it is new territory professionally, I actually grew up here… It has been so fun to revisit these amazing places where I spent time as a kid… This image from Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest is from a fall adventure session! Getting ready is one of my favorite parts of the wedding day! In July we traveled up to our old stomping grounds in the Northeast to photograph Jordan and Joe’s wedding. We made a family adventure out of the trip and visited some special places along the way! One of our favorite stops was Chincoteague Island, VA where we explored the national seashore, spotted wild ponies, played on the beach and visited the awesome Assateague Lighthouse! I think we all fell in love with the charm of this section of the Virginia Coast! We can’t wait to return. Janet and Bryan’s adventure engagement session was such a blast! Alyssa and German’s Biltmore Estate engagement session was awesome (I mean really… look at these two!!!!). We cannot wait for their wedding this June at Biltmore Estate’s Lioncrest! Abby and Tripp’s adventure engagement session started in the forest exploring the gorgeous waterfalls of Dupont Forest and ended with a gorgeous sunset on top of Jump Off Rock in Hendersonville! Claire and Nathan’s Lake Eden Events wedding was stunning and I adore this image Matt took of the guys at one of the Lake Eden cabins! With peacocks and spanish moss Kelly and Mark’s Magnolia Plantation Wedding was a highlight of our season! Beer and photos?! Yes please! Wicked Weeds Funkatorium in Asheville was the site of Megan and Will’s day-after session! Janet and Bryan’s Black Balsam engagement session at sunset was so fun and beautiful! The view from the Biltmore Estate is simply spectacular! Matt and his guys playing some impromptu croquet before his Old Edwards Inn Wedding! First looks with dad are always sweet! Who doesn’t love a little wedding day goofiness! Allison and Graham’s wedding at The Venue – Asheville was awesome!! Check out our full wedding post from their day! Because who doesn’t love good dance moves?!! Heidi and Andrew’s first look in Grand Central Station was amazing!!! Check out our full summary of their NYC wedding here and here! Amy and Colin’s asheville farm wedding had it all! What a ball we had with Heidi and Andrew in NYC! Their wedding reception took place on a Yacht that cruised the New York harbor! This is one of my favorite images from the evening… In the background is the Brooklyn Bridge, where Andrew had proposed to Heidi! Megan and Will’s wedding at The Crest Center and Pavillion was quite gorgeous – the sunset for their ceremony was stunning!! Sparklers are always a big hit amongst the little ones at weddings!! It’s enchanting! Well, thanks for hanging in there… Whewww, that was a long one!! We’re so excited to see what 2017 has in store. So far it’s looking pretty awesome! We hope that if you know anyone getting married in 2017 or 2018 you’ll share this post… Help spread the word about AMW Studios!!! We are based here in the Asheville area but travel often and are always seeking out our next adventure! Let us know where you’re getting married… I bet we’ll go there too! In addition to weddings, we offer lifestyle family portraiture, adventure engagement sessions and more!
Okay, grab yourself a drink (again) because here is part two of Heidi and Andrew’s NYC wedding. If you haven’t seen part one stop right here and follow this link to check it out!!! Okay, now that you’re all caught up, I’m so excited to share with you more of this amazing wedding. We left off with some bride and groom portraits in Grand Central Station and we’re continuing today with a few photos in Central Park followed by their sunset ceremony on the top deck of The Atlantica and an epic dance party while cruising the NY Harbor! As we headed (via a hot limo) from Grand Central, Andrew snagged a couple photo’s of his bride admiring the view…Those iconic city streets. Have you seen a cuter ring bearer?! Not sure if we have! Love this one of Heidi and Andrew! When we got to Chelsea Pier’s, I hurried inside to grab just a couple details before all the guests boarded the Yacht! The lower level of the yacht was set for dinner, beautiful and classic!! Noticing that the sun was starting to get low on the horizon I went to grab Heidi + Andrew for some impromptu photo’s on the top deck! I’m glad I did! Man, the light was amazing!! We had a few minutes before the ceremony to sneak a couple images of the wedding party! Isn’t this adorable?! Heidi’s two amazing kids walked her down the aisle, it was darling!!! As the ceremony progressed, the boat pulled up along side Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, the guests were treated to a gorgeous view! These two are adorable and were so so excited to pronounced husband and wife!!! After the ceremony everyone headed downstairs to the middle stateroom where guests grabbed drinks and circled around to watch Heidi and Andrew celebrate their first dance!!! It was a pretty epic first dance!!! THEN… The party started!!! And boy what a party it was!! I have to say, I was impressed… Not only was their some pretty awesome dancing but it also took place on a moving boat and no one fell over!!! Occasionally we would step out to take in the ever changing scenery and snap a couple quick photos!!! Again with those awesome dance moves!!! By far one of the most memorable parts of the evening was pulling up to the Statue of Liberty at around 11 at night… The yacht get’s so close to the statue, you can see all the details on Lady Liberty’s face… it’s amazing!!! I can honestly say that, short of working on another Elite Charter’s wedding, I will probably never get the opportunity to take a photograph of the Statue of Liberty in quite the same way again! The party continued… until 1am! Those New Yorkers sure know how to party!!! I don’t normally post so many party pictures but we had so much fun with this crowd!!! The bubble exit off The Atlantica made for some cool photo’s! I’ll end with two night portraits take from the top deck of the Atlantica! The Brooklyn Bridge (which is where Andrew proposed to Heidi) is in the background!!! A huge thank you to Heidi and Andrew for asking us to travel up to NYC to document their wedding day!!! What a blast it was!!!
