A couple poses for a photograph at the top of Acorn Street in Boston Massachusetts during there engagement session pintopinterest

If you are anything like Ariel and I you probably get a bit nervous at the thought of having your photo taken. For me, the idea of posing for a camera over the course of 2 straight hours brings anything but a smile to my face.

Of course, luckily, I’m not in a position that I have to pose for those 2 hours. If I were though, there are 3 effortless tips that I would hope someone would share with me to improve my Asheville engagement session. You read that right, just 3.

  1. Eat something!

Seriously! Wolf down an energy bar or two right before the session. It will do wonders to keep your energy up and you won’t be wondering when you get to eat toward the end of the session.

Ariel and I have a habit of letting sessions run late. After you give us the 2 hours we scheduled for the session we are happy to let you go whenever you need, but we would hate to have you cut out just because you’re hungry.

  3. Don’t be afraid of color!

This is where I tend to get a little bit to technical. I will spare you most of the discussion about the difference between density and hue. The point to this tip is simple.

“Don’t be afraid of color!” ~ AMW Studios

Bright colors, pastels, earthy tones; they all work. Just try to avoid extremes in density. Very, very light and very, very dark are hard for the camera to capture accurately in one exposure. Black and white is easier than light pink and a deep dark red so don’t worry about the wedding dress against the tuxedo. Again, at Ariel’s request I won’t go into the tech side of dynamic range. Just know that color is great in photos and we are happy to talk you through it!

  5. Choose a significant location!

Capturing real emotion requires real emotions! Part of what we do as professional Asheville wedding photographers is to bring out emotions in our clients. A lot of this emotional persuasion can be done through conversation, jokes and general sociability. Some of it however, has to come from our clients. Being in a location that induces emotions makes that side of things much much easier.

First date locations are a great place to have a session. The place where the proposal took place can make for some great images too. It doesn’t have to be a spot where something earth shattering happened, just a place that makes you smile when you think of going there or doing that!

We are more than happy to call a restaurant and inquire about access before they open! Maybe even getting some items from the kitchen for the table!

If you don’t do any of the tips above, just trust your photographer! You hired them for a reason!

A cute couple poses for engagement photography in Copley Square Boston pintopinterest

Two weeks ago we met up with this awesome couple for their spring engagement session in Boston!! We had a blast exploring some of their favorite places in Boston! The session started off in Copley Square where we spent much of our time at Trinity Church which makes the perfect backdrop for engagement photos (or, wedding photos, for that matter). From Copley we headed over to Fenway Park where they often go to Red Sox games, they even brought their own Jersey’s! Last we headed over to pick up their two pups and we wandered in the park by their home, I think we got some cute ones with the dogs 🙂 I absolutely love it when couples involve their pups for their engagement sessions, it always adds a fun dynamic to the session! Jess and Paul decided they wanted us to photograph their wedding after a chat over the phone so this was our first time meeting these two… I think it’s safe to say that they are awesome and we can’t wait to document their wedding this weekend at the gorgeous Bishop Farm B&B in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Bishop Farm is easily one of the most stunning wedding venues that we’ve photographed at in New Hampshire. I can’t think of a better time of year to have a barn wedding in the mountains that May before it gets to hot and with flowers in full bloom!

A huge congratulations to Jess and Paul, we hope you love these photos! We absolutely can not wait for your wedding!!!

Creative Bride and Groom portrait in front of Montreat College's Waterfallpintopinterest

Rebecca and Sam had a gorgeous fall wedding at Montreat College, tucked away in the mountains just outside of Asheville NC. There are so many reasons we were over the moon excited to be a part of their wedding day, one very big one was that they were our first wedding booked in North Carolina… oh but there were so many more… Our very first Skype meeting with these two was a blast and we quickly discovered how much we had in common… Particularly our love of the outdoors, hiking, beer, good food, travel. Did I mention that these two were about to embark on their pre-wedding honeymoon hiking the Santiago De Camino, an amazing, grueling 500 mile trek across Spain. If you haven’t heard of it I highly recommend the movie The Way.
Maybe two days before we did our initial Skype consult with these two, we had watched The Way… So when Rebecca and Sam mentioned that they were about to embark on the adventure themselves, we took it as a sign that we were meant to document their wedding day :)!!
So needless to say, we were thrilled when they decided we were the right photographers for them!
Check out some of our favorite images from their wedding below!

Wedding Party having some fun during the fall wedding at Montreat Collegepintopinterest

Rebecca’s choice of the vibrant purple colors in the bridesmaid dresses along with the whites and purple accents in her bouquet were absolutely stunning against all the stone architecture at Montreat College! The wedding party made our job super easy, they were some of the most fun, willing groups we have worked with!!

When it comes to couples portraits it never hurts to have a super adventurous bride and groom! These two were all about climbing around on rocks in front of a gorgeous waterfall, whatever it takes to get the best angle 🙂 Don’t think that we made them take all the risk… Matt and I always joke that it’s not a normal day at work unless we climb at least one tree (wall, rock, mountain etc..), traverse a stream or something of that nature. Again… Whatever it takes to get the best angle!

Complete with beautiful scenery, pretty details, fabulous food and some of the friendliest guests/family/friends… Needless to say their wedding set the bar pretty high when it comes to Western North Carolina weddings! With our move to Asheville North Carolina coming up this fall, we can’t wait to officially become Asheville Wedding Photographers!

A huge thank you to the rest of the team who helped to make Rebecca and Sam’s wedding day awesome!
